Ayurveda And The Brain

Ayurveda classifies the tissues of the body as different Dhatus. The Majja Dhatu is related to the brain, spinal cord, and bone marrow. The Majja Agni is responsible for the metabolism of this Dhatu. So, the strength and quality of this Agni directly affect the Majja Dhatu tissues. This Dhatu makes a person feel complete and balanced. Any issues with this cause the person to feel demotivated and leads to other psychological issues. When there is a Vata Dosha imbalance, it affects this Agni and makes it variable. A Pitta Dosha problem with this Agni makes it low.

Kapha Dosha problems in the Majja Dhara Kala form tissue that is excessive but of low quality with the sluggish movement of nerve impulses (Prana). An increase in Kapha Dosha will eventually block the flow of Prana entirely. The symptoms of this are very similar to the Vata Dosha imbalance in this Dhatu and it is commonly misdiagnosed as the same. Pitta Dosha vitiation results in the minimal or moderate formation of tissue. This is efficient allowing good movement of Prana but can create inflammation and excessive metabolization of the tissue. It causes neuritis and destroys the myelin sheath of the nerves and causes disorders such as multiple sclerosis, dementia, and diseases such as Parkinson’s.

When the Vata Dosha is vitiated it causes irregularity in the formation of tissue that is also fragile and of low quality. The Prana moves without restraint and the person’s reactions are often sudden and not measured. This causes hyperactivity and hypoactivity, tics, and tremor. There is an ineffective movement of Prana. Kapha imbalance causes Prana flow deficiency due to obstruction while the Vata imbalance blockage is because of structural damage. When Ama or metabolic waste is also involved it further worsens the condition. The Mala for this Dhatu is the eye secretions and an Ayurvedic doctor can study the condition of the Dhatu through the nature of the eye secretions.

The Brain - Overview

The nervous system has two parts; the central nervous system and the peripheral nervous system. The central nervous system is the brain and the spinal cord. The peripheral nervous system is composed of the nerves. Accordingly, the nervous system can have problems caused by infections, structural defects, trauma, tumours, blood flow problems, and degeneration. Learning problems and disabilities are attributed to environmental factors, medical conditions, genetics, improper neurological development, brain structure problems, or chronic childhood ear infections. A balanced diet and proper nutrition can gradually help in neurological development. Memory loss problems can be caused by medications and also habits such as alcohol abuse and smoking. Depression and sleep deprivation can also interfere with memory. Sometimes, issues such as suffering a stroke, head injury, or some other serious illness can cause memory problems. Deficiency of sufficient fat, proteins, and vitamins B1 and B12 can also cause memory loss. Some conditions that cause degeneration of the nervous system such as dementia and Alzheimers can also cause issues.
